The typical commitment is roughly 3-5 days per week depending on the combination of camps, clinics, games and practices. We do work to create flexible schedules, understanding the time constraints of all families.
This also depends on what stage of the athletic calendar year we are in. (i.e. – Spring time has a larger commitment than the Summer or Fall)
The teams will play in the San Diego Youth Lacrosse Association. The 7th and 8th grade teams will play in a competitive league with the top 16 teams in a 35 team league making the playoffs.
There are “A” teams & “B” teams (In some cases “AA” teams depending on Roster sizes and skill)
“AA” & “A” are competitive teams focused on Elite play and vary in playing time.
“B” Teams are developmental teams with a focus on improving the team and players skills.
The teams are seeded preseason based on team strength and play a schedule against similarly skilled teams.
The League will do it’s best to assign pre-season rankings and to ensure that teams of similar caliber are playing each other
The teams will play a 10-15 game schedule.

As a sport, lacrosse is often perceived as a dangerous sport. Injury statistics would prove otherwise however as with all sports serious injuries can occur. The game has evolved with an emphasis on player safety. At the elementary level physical contact is limited and full-body contact is not allowed. The equipment manufacturers have worked to develop excellent equipment that protects the players.
Lacrosse is a combination of hockey, basketball, and soccer. Lacrosse offers the speed and power of football and hockey and the endurance, agility, and strategy of soccer and basketball. Lacrosse is both exciting to play and thrilling to watch. Anyone can play lacrosse big or small. For an informational video on lacrosse please follow this link: US Lacrosse: This is Lacrosse.

Lacrosse sticks can range from $30 to $200. Most beginning players can utilize an entry level stick. We recommend the lacrosse stick be strung with hard mesh and not soft mesh. When you go to the retail store get a stick you can ask them for a stick with hard mesh. As players improve they can move to more advanced and expensive sticks. The real key to having a great stick is how much time you spend using it. If you do not practice on the wall it will not matter what kind of stick you have. Offensive players utilize short sticks and the defense players utilize long poles. If you go to a retail lacrosse store they can help you with your stick.
My son or daughter is new to the game of lacrosse. Do you recommend any clinics or camps?
Our coaches, staff and partner organizations such as the National Lacrosse League, San Diego Seals and the Premier Lacrosse League and others are uniquely qualified to work with young athletes of all ages and experience levels. We specifically create programs to cater each skill and experience stage. Our coaches emphasize fun and learning more than winning and perfection. We have partnerships with camps and clinics throughout our athletic year to continue development for all our athletes. Check check the camps and clinics on our pages and calendar.
The 5th – 8th grade programs participate in a competitive league. Our goal is to develop all players, but we cannot guarantee that all players will get equal playing time every game. Our coaches are instructed to provide equal opportunities to all team members to succeed. Opportunities can come in practice, camps & clinics and in league games but all players are given the chance to compete in games.
Not for the regular league teams. Tierrasanta Lacrosse, along with the primary league that we are affiliated with – San Diego Youth Lacrosse Association – are dedicated to teaching the game of lacrosse and creating opportunities to learn and play for all skill levels. We are committed to provide equal development and playing opportunities to both new and experienced players within the league.
If Roster size allows, Tierrasanta may run “Select” or “Elite” teams for boys at the U13 and U15 levels. These rosters are set through tryouts among the players within the program who are interested in playing at a higher level, and there are additional fees and additional practices and games for these teams.
This includes tournaments that run passed the July end of the athletic year.
These tournaments are not run or administered by TSYL
As additional interest develops in the girls program, we will add these opportunities for girls players, as well.
